The Art of Social Media Timing

Written on Mar 11 2013

Truly successful individuals, companies and organizations have discovered that timing is one of the most critical elements of their success. Timing affects the way we all behave in day-to-day interactions, whether we are conscious of it or not. At SimplySocial, we have found that the same is true with social sharing. Timing is critical when you have great content to share, which is why our software helps clients manage this important element. For instance, publishing during certain periods in the day increases the total reach of individuals viewing your content, gaining the most value out of your network.

When is the best time to post on Social Media?

Since the “early days” of social media, people keep asking “When is the best time to post?” Be aware that each social network has its own culture and users who exhibit distinct behavior patterns. Understanding the simple characteristics of each social network lets you publish content at the optimum time for reaching the largest audience.

How do you discover the right time?

Facebook
The best time to post on Facebook is from 1 P.M. to 4 P.M.; the worst time is between 8 P.M. and 8 A.M. Traffic builds on Facebook after 9 A.M. and its peak is Wednesday at 3 P.M..

Twitter
The best time to tweet is between 1 P.M. and 3 P.M. while the worst time is between 8 P.M. and 9 A.M. On Twitter traffic builds after 11am and its peak days are Monday through Thursday.

Linkedin
The best time to post on Linkedin is early morning, 7 A.M. to 9 A.M. and early evening, 5 P.M. to 6 P.M. The worst time is between 10 P.M. and 6 A.M. Traffic builds before and after business hours, and the peak coming Tuesday through Thursday.

You can see that Facebook and Twitter give you the best results in the afternoon, while LinkedIn is at its peak in the morning.

NOTE:
The content of your post matters. You cannot expect great results solely based on posting during rush hours. You must generate strong content that is relevant to your audience in order to boost traffic. Share information that educates, entertains and engages your community.

Keep in mind that times may vary based on industry and other factors (there is no exact science). Because of this, it is important to monitor your analytics dashboards to gain detailed insights about your unique audience and their online habits. With this information you can create a content marketing strategy that takes full advantage of your networks.
